An important discovery in the health & fitness industry over the past 17 years is this simple fact: Our bodies burn stored body fat faster while working out if (and this is a pretty big if)… if we eat a diet composed of a moderate amount of carbohydrates and protein, and a low to moderate amount of good dietary fats.

It is especially difficult to lose weight when eating a diet primarily consisting of carbohydrates, especially if you workout a lot, because when you eat like that, you force your body to burn carbohydrates (sugars). When you switch the equation around a bit and eat a diet composed of about 1⁄3 protein, you allow your body to burn stored body fat — which is the reason most of us workout. In other words, the ratio of the carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in your diet determines if you will predominately burn carbohydrates or stored body fat.

Let’s face it. We are always burning calories, and without getting too technical, it’s the hormonal reaction from the foods we eat that determines what we will burn for energy. The normal response in the body to eating carbohydrates, (e.g., breads, pastas, fruits, sweets, etc.) is a rise in blood-sugar levels. To counteract and prevent excessive blood-sugar levels, the body produces insulin. Insulin stores calories as fat and glycogen (i.e., stored carbohydrates in the liver and muscle) and any excess as body fat.

The opposite hormone to insulin is glucagon. Protein in the diet releases glucagon, which mobilizes stored glycogen in the liver and bloodstream, allowing the muscles to burn fat, their preferred energy source. That is why when you burn more stored body fat, not only do you lose body fat, you have more energy and endurance.

Just think how good you feel when you eat a well balanced meal, like a chicken breast salad without gobs of dressing, versus a high-carbohydrate meal like pasta and bread. Not only are you usually not hungry for many hours after a balanced meal, you probably don’t feel lethargic, irritable, or bloated. Simply put, by adding a little protein and subtracting a few carbohydrates from your diet, you will experience body fat loss, have better energy, and look and feel great.

And of course PureFit Nutrition Bars are a perfect choice as they are composed to a 40/30/30 ratio of carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats as recommended.

Spring is in the air so get into shape now with PureFit

So, do you want to burn more body fat now? – buy PureFit bars here

Winter is your enemy. Cold temperatures force you inside, where you shovel high-fat comfort foods down your throat. Before you know it, you’ve gained 5 kg’s and the upcoming spring season has you chained to a treadmill. Winter weight gain isn’t just an urban myth; it’s driven by biology and fueled by mood. In fact, most of us gain between 1-2 kg’s during the winter months, despite our best efforts. But fret not: You can combat winter weight gain and remain slim and trim for spring.

Causes

There are lots of culprits, but cold is the No.1 suspect. When temperatures drop, we stay inside. Our metabolisms slow to a crawl and we pack on the pounds. But the conspiracy runs deeper than that. During the winter, we forgo low-calorie snacks for prepackaged, high-fat delights like chips, nuts and crackers. We also get less sunlight, which makes us feel down in the dumps. To combat those feelings, we gobble up carbohydrates, fats and sugars, which make us feel better by stimulating the brain to release serotonin “the feel good” chemical.

Serotonin and mood

Serotonin receptors are stimulated by carbohydrates and most strongly by simple sugars. So the fastest way to a quick “home-made” seratonin boost is a sugary snack or drink.

However, this effect is very short-lived and leads to a worsening of mood shortly after the high – triggering sugar cravings, mood swings and eventual weight gain. This happens because in order for the levels of all the chemicals within the body to be in balance, our blood sugar levels need to be kept constant.

The brain takes the glucose it needs before any other organ in the body and it’s also the organ most sensitive to tiny fluctuations in blood sugar levels. A slight drop in this level leads to cloud/sluggish thinking, loss of concentration, loss of motivation, tiredness and depression.

What the body requires is a sustained, even production and release of serotonin – and the way to do this is with complex carbohydrates.

Are we fighting evolution?

Some doctors believe that we’re genetically programmed to gain weight when it gets chilly. “Your body may be working against you to hang on to it so you stay warm,” said Lawrence Cheskin, MD, founder of the Johns Hopkins Weight Management Center in Baltimore.

Fat is a great insulator and it really does a great job of keeping you warm. Before the days of forced air heating and good insulation, a few extra pounds could mean the difference between life and death. For most of us, however, freezing to death isn’t really a problem. We want to look and feel good.

How to fight it

Stay active

Exercise is your best weapon against winter weight gain. And strength training will do a lot to keep your metabolism revving. So hit the gym at least three times a week and devise a workout routine that will tax your biggest muscles. Focus on your legs; they burn more calories than any other part of your body. Add a little cardio to the routine — about 15 minutes per workout — and you’ll do a lot to avoid packing on pounds.

Get some sun

Go outside, even when it’s cold. Bundle up and jog around the block or kick a ball around with the kids. The sunlight will refresh your mind and the activity will put you in a better mood, making it easier to turn down those high calorie food choices. If you don’t have time for a dedicated outside session, try to take a walk during your lunch hour. “Even an hour of direct sunlight a day can help elevate your disposition,” says Raymond W. Lam, M.D., in an article in Shape magazine.

You can eat those holiday treats as long as you stay active…

Take up a new sport

Winter sports will help you get outdoors and stay in shape until spring. If it’s just too cold to do anything outside, consider swimming. Many health clubs have heated indoor pools, and partaking in a summertime activity can trick your subconscious into believing the weather is fair. Swimming is also one of the best ways to burn energy; it consumes more calories per hour than running, bicycling or weightlifting.

Eat well

Eating well doesn’t mean stuffing yourself with mashed potatoes, pecan pie and honey-baked ham. It means finding tasty, low-calorie alternatives that will satisfy your gut and your mind. Plenty of winter crops are low in fat and calories, like squash, onions, oranges, artichokes, kale, Brussels sprouts (yes, they are tasty if cooked correctly), and cauliflower. They’re also filling, which will help you say no to that second piece of pumpkin pie.

Keep in mind, however, that wintertime is chock-full of cookies, pies and treats of all kinds. It’ll be nearly impossible to avoid them all, so don’t. Have a few — but only a few — treats to satisfy your cravings. If you’re exercising, the extra calories won’t make a huge difference. When you’re faced with a big winter dinner, don’t deny yourself; it’ll just drive you crazy. Instead, load your plate with lean protein (chicken is great) and vegetables. Take only small tastes of high-fat, high-calorie dishes like ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, and stuffing.

Lay off the booze

It’ll be tempting to sit down by the fire and crack open a bottle of Red Wine or a few bottles of Guinness and the like during the winter, but don’t. Alcohol contains a lot of empty calories and it slows down your metabolism. Limit yourself to just one drink a day, if you must.

Stay healthy

Gaining a little weight during the winter may be an inevitable biological reaction to cold temperatures. Becoming a couch potato is, however, very much avoidable. Stay active during the winter, even if you don’t avoid all the holiday treats. Lack of exercise will affect your health and mood, and will add those few extra pounds you don’t need.

Watch the “Snacks”!!!

Mid-morning and Mid-Afternoon are the most dangerous times for “snacking”…

Our blood sugar is dipping so we go and grab a flat white and a warm chocolate chip muffin – but that’s ok right? Hey, it’s just a snack…

Let’s really have a look at what you’re eating:

1 x Flat White: Approx 224 calories and 8.4grams of fat..whoops! A better option is to have the long black with 2, yes 2 calories. If you can’t take your coffee black, have a little steamed milk with it.

1 x Chocolate chip muffin: Approx 300 calories – yes, 300 calories and most of them from sugar and fat..

So in that 15 minute mid-morning snack you just had over 500 calories – Most from sugar and fat… If you’re a man you just had 25% of your daily calories in a snack, if you’re a woman more likely close to 30%…no wonder you are exceeding your daily limit and getting the resultant weigh gain.

Solutions

Make a choice

Ditch that crappy muffin or piece of cake and use the PureFit Nutrition Bar in it’s place (I like the chocolate brownie to bust my “sweet” craving). This way you are having a nicely balanced low GI snack with 18grams of protein, healthy fats and carbohydrates to keep your blood sugar stable and fuel the rest of your day with no “crash” after the sugar rush

Plan Ahead

Don’t get caught out, throw a few PureFit bars into your car glove box, gym bag and briefcase. They don’t melt and you have 4 flavour choices. When snack time comes grab a bar and fuel up for the day ahead with a healthy balanced choice.

This year when spring comes don’t spend your time undoing winter’s weight gain…

I just got asked by a friend returning from the USA if the Purefit bars were in any way affected by the salmonella scare on peanut butter a couple of months ago. I can categorically state that PureFit bars were not affected at all, but some of our competitors were not so fortunate…

We are totally committed to the highest quality suppliers and micro-batch testing to ensure you receive a perfect product every time.

Here’s the official release from PureFit founder Robb Dorf;

For anyone wondering, unlike some other companies nutrition bars, PureFit Nutrition Bars—which come in four 100% all-natural and wheat- and gluten-free flavors (including Peanut Butter Crunch)—are NOT affected by the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) recent warning about peanut butter.

Background: Recently, the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA)—a peanut processing company and maker of peanut butter for bulk distribution to institutions, food service industries, and private label food companies—in coordination with the FDA, announced a recall of peanut butter produced in its Blakely, Georgia, processing facility because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

While Clif Bar & Company today announced the recall of some of its bars (including: Clif Bar Chocolate Chip Peanut Crunch, Clif Bar Crunchy Peanut Butter, Clif Bar Peanut Toffee Buzz, ZBaR Peanut Butter, Clif Builders Peanut Butter, Luna Nutz over Chocolate, Luna Peanut Butter Cookie, and all Clif Mojo Bars), PureFit Nutrition Bars are safe!

PureFit Bars are Safe: PureFit, working cooperatively with the California Department of Public Health and the FDA, has determined that NONE of our products contain any of the suspect lots of recalled peanut butter. In fact, we micro-test every batch of bars before they are released from our manufacturing facility, and in seven-plus years of manufacturing, we have never had a test come back positive for ANYTHING (anything that is besides being the best darn wheat-, gluten-, and dairy-free nutrition bar on the market).

PureFit remains fully committed to the continued testing and monitoring of the quality and freshness of our award-winning nutrition bars.

Hi Guys, yes I know this is not exactly Fitness and/or Nutrition information, but I had an email from a very annoyed and frustrated potential customer (well, non-customer as it turned out…) so I thought I better address the issue once and for all for you. Anyway he was livid that we did not accept his credit card on the Purefit website and that the online store took him away from the site to the paypal processing…

Ok, here’s the reasons why I chose to use Paypal.

1. Credibility: As a new business I thought the use Paypal would put customer’s minds at ease that they were entrusting their valuable personal infomation to a recognised GLOBAL credit card processing facility rather than a new website that anyone could have created as a “front” and could be hosted in a third world country scamming credit card details.

2. I dont like banks… OK, this is maybe a bit tough on banks and I hope I have not offended anyone… BUT dealing with banks to provide these merchant facilities is more painful than going to the dentist. They want minimum 3 year sign-up contracts, charge more for the same service etc etc and frankly seeing how well banks have done things lately they are the last people I want to deal with at the moment. Call me a cynic…

As a postnote, I offered this customer 3 other ways of paying (cheque, bank deposit, or buy via a retail partner) but he never came back to me…

I will always go out of my way to personally assist anyone who wants to buy the products, if you have problems with using Paypal please comment or drop me a line. If the response is overwhelming I’ll change it!

Regards Gerry

Hi Guys, I’ve grabbed this blog straight from the PureFit USA website. It’s written by the founder of PureFit, Robb Dorf, and blows apart some of the myths about soy protein.
Now Robb’s a smart guy (for a start he has a bachelor of science in exercise physiology) so this is a well researched article and more importantly it is based on science, not anecdotal claims.

Here’s the article…

Busting Common Soy-related Myths & Claims
By Robb Dorf

Almost every food has its time in the spotlight as the new “super food” — eggs, milk, coffee, chocolate, red wine and countless others. At any one time, magazine articles, newspaper headlines and TV segments praise a food’s amazing benefits; then a few months later (or sometimes even days or weeks), a completely new set of messages come out proposing the exact opposite.

Now it’s soy’s turn. For years, we heard nothing but positive things about soy’s cancer-fighting, heart-healthy and overall health benefits. Lately, however, word on the street is that some of those healthful claims about soy are overstated, while some are even perpetuating myths like soy does more harm than good.

Although a few negative claims have surfaced recently, there’s no need to banish soy from your diet. Let’s look at some of the most widely held soy-related myths & claims and the research that shows that soy continues to be a healthy choice.

Myth/Claim #1: Soy can contribute to cancer growth

Soybeans are rich in isoflavones, compounds that are similar to the female hormone estrogen. In some tissues, these substances mimic the action of estrogen, while in others they block the action. Recent studies on the effect of isoflavones are conflicting: Some research suggests they may reduce cancer growth, while others suggest their estrogenic activity could contribute to cancer growth.

A 2008 study in the Nutrition Journal stated that there is little clinical evidence to suggest that isoflavones increase the risk of breast cancer in healthy women or worsen the prognosis of breast cancer patients (see note 1 at end of article). Although a few recent studies have shown that soy may not offer the level of protection against cancer as once thought, other recent studies still suggest that soy plays a protective role against some cancers, including breast, colorectal and prostate cancers (see references 2-4 at the end of this article).

Bottom line: Moderate intake of dietary soy is safe, though the safety of concentrated soy supplements (e.g., pills, powders) needs further study. The American Cancer Society continues to state on their Web site that eating or drinking soy products is considered safe for those who aren’t allergic to soy, and notes that using soy foods as a substitute for some servings of animal protein is one way to reduce red meat and animal fat intake. Nancy Clark, M.S., R.D., author of Nancy Clark’s Sports Nutrition Guidebook, notes “just don’t expect the soy alternative to taste like red meat. That is, don’t expect the soy burger to taste like a hamburger.”

Myth/Claim #2: Soy has no positive effect on cardiovascular health

After a careful review of human studies, in 1999 the FDA gave permission for manufacturers to include a claim on their food labels that a daily intake of 25 grams of soy protein may reduce heart disease risk. Today, the degree of soy’s positive effect on heart health has come into question.

A recent study reviewed the findings in a majority of 22 randomized trials in which isolated soy protein with isolflavones (compared with milk or other proteins) decreased LDL cholesterol on average by just 3%, down from an earlier study’s findings of 12.9% (see references 5 and 6 at the end of this article). Although the more recent study showed a less significant effect on cholesterol, it still concluded that soy’s fiber, vitamins, minerals and low content of saturated fat can benefit cardiovascular and overall health. In addition, a 2005 study concluded that soy protein can reduce blood pressure and may help prevent and treat hypertension, a leading risk factor for heart disease (see reference 7 at the end of this article).

Bottom line: Although the current research shows that soy may not protect against heart disease at the level once believed, it’s still a healthy source of protein, fiber, minerals and is a great alternative to red meat — the Harvard School of Public Health’s Nutrition Source Web site suggests two to four servings per week to replace red meat.

Myth/Claim #3: Soy decreases fertility and testosterone in men

The effect of soy on men’s fertility came into question in a 2008 study that showed a decrease in sperm concentration — but not motility, morphology or ejaculate volume, which indicate sperm quality — in men who ate soy compared to those who did not (see reference 8 at the end of this article). The most significant effect was found in men who were overweight or who had a higher concentration of sperm to begin with. According to the National Infertility Association, the normal range for sperm is between 40 million and 300 million per milliliter, and counts of 20 million are considered healthy if morphology and motility are normal.

In the 2008 study, the reduction on average was 35 million, which still leaves a well-above-average sperm count for those at the top of the range who showed the most significant reduction. An earlier study in which healthy volunteers took a supplement containing 40 mg of isoflavones daily for two months also showed no effect on semen quality (see reference 9 at the end of this article).

There have been several studies on soy’s effect on testosterone, offering varying conclusions, including two recent studies on purified isoflavones and soy foods in men’s diets that found no significant changes in testosterone levels (see references 10 and 11 at the end of this article). A recent analysis of 29 trials and 32 treatment groups found no significant effects of soy protein or isoflavone intake on testosterone levels (see reference 12 at the end of this article). Based on this latest analysis, there doesn’t appear to be any cause for concern for men who enjoy a few servings of soy foods each week.

Bottom line: The 2008 study that showed a decrease in sperm concentration was most pronounced in men who had a higher-than-average sperm count to begin with and it showed no decrease in sperm quality. As for soy reducing testosterone in men, there’s simply not enough current evidence that shows this to be the case.

Moderation is the key

Though the degree to which soy may protect against particular diseases may have come into question lately, soy continues to be an excellent source of protein as part of a balanced diet. Soy is a complete protein, rich in vitamins and minerals, and is a great, low-fat alternative to red meat.

As author Nancy Clark suggests, you should enjoy soy as a quick-and-easy, cook-free protein source that takes on the wonderful taste of native cuisines, such as in Chinese stir-fries or Indian curries. Or, more easily, enjoy soy milk with breakfast cereal or a soy-containing nutrition bar before or after a workout.

We’ve just exhibited at the Auckland Gluten Free and Allergy Show and what a weekend, just an incredible response. NZ turned on 2 contrasting days; One crisp, clear and beautiful…and the other freezing cold and wet so I was a little worried about the turnout…I needn’t have been!
We had show attendees 5 deep around the stand tasting the bars and buying them right there on the spot by the box load. The feedback was so positive, with great comments on the taste, the non-melt convenience and of course the fact that they are Gluten, Wheat, Dairy and Artificial Sweetner free. Here’s a photo of me looking frazzled trying to assist the big crowd around the stand!

Regards and Healthy eating
